Scripture says that Christ is the vine, we are the branches. We are all connected. Scripture says we are all one body in Christ. When a person dies they do not cease to be a member of the body of Christ. The same Holy Spirit that dwells within us dwells within the souls in Heaven.
They are united to God, therefore they share His interests and concerns about us. Some are assigned to us. If your Mother cared deeply about you in this life, then she cares deeply about you in the next as well. Those who have left their body behind for an eternal reward are not dead.
They are more alive now than they were here on earth and more close to God, more pure of heart, more enlightened, hence their prayers will be more powerful and influential with God as well.
We see Jesus with Moses and Elijah on Mount Tabor. Mark 9:2-8; Matthew 17:1-8; Luke 9:28-36] The poor man Lazarus is taken to Abraham's bosom. Abraham interacts with the rich man Luke 16.
in Revelation 5:8, where John depicts the saints in heaven offering our prayers to God under the form of "golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints." But if the saints in heaven are offering our prayers to God, then they must be aware of our prayers. They love us and look out for us.

To this day, Roman Catholic, Eastern Catholic, Orthodox, and Coptic Churches make up the vast majority of Christianity.
